PhoXo is an image editor which emphasises its fun extras, but also has some useful tools to explore.

Launch the program and you'll first notice the large Clip Art and Frame windows. Cartoon-style emoticons, car images, animals, flags and more are available to be pasted into your images, and a whole gallery of frames can be added with a double-click.

And there are other quirky options, too, like the ability to turn your photos into ASCII art.

The program has plenty of more useful features, though: four selection tools, simple paint and drawing options, lots of colour tweaks and adjustments, layer support and a batch watermarking tool, as well as the usual basics (crop, resize, rotate and so on).

We particularly liked some of the effects. While they're not exactly original, filters like "Oil Painting" and "Lens Flare" do deliver good results with minimal effort - they're not just the very basic and limited equivalents you'll sometimes see with other tools.

PhoXo does have a few interface oddities. It always opens full-screen, regardless of how you closed it; the lack of an Edit menu is annoying when you're so used to seeing it everywhere else, and the zoom option is a little clumsy.

On balance PhoXo is a useful tool, though, and it's entirely free: no ads, no nag screens, even clicking the "Sponsor Us" button on their web site asks only that you "tell your friends" about it.

Funny Photo Maker is a clever tool which makes it incredibly quick and easy to add fun effects to your photos. Open a portrait shot of a friend or family member, for instance, then position the selection rectangle around their face, and you're ready to go. Just choose one of the 200+ templates on offer for instant results. Click one frame and it'll show your friend on the big screen in Time Square, for instance. Another might show them as the face on a dollar bill (as well as many other currencies and denominations). And you can add their face to movie posters (Avatar, Iron Man, Lord of the Rings and more), magazine covers (Cosmo, GQ, Details, Vogue), put their face on an animal's body, display them on calendars, and more. This is just the start, though. Maybe you'd like to turn that picture into a work of art? Select the Artistic tab and you'll find more filters, each of which can transform your image with a click. So you can add rain, snow or dew drops to the picture, say; give it an oil, water painting or pastel look; add all kinds of colour or lighting effects, turn it into a collage, add some neat distortion effects, and more. Browse the menus and you'll find even more tools to play with. So "Expression", for instance, will take the picture of a face, distort it to look happy, angry or sad, even animate it. You can also edit an image in more regular ways, perhaps removing red eye, sharpening a shot, adding a text caption or some clipart. And when you're done then you can save the image locally, or share it directly via your Facebook or Twitter account. You do have to keep your editing expectations fairly low here, as the program is more about ease of use than trying to rival Photoshop. So you don't get advanced selection tools to try and precisely separate a face from the image background, for instance, and there aren't 100 hi-tech ways to adjust your image colours (or really any at all). That doesn't matter, though. Funny Photo Maker works because you can have the basic setup complete within seconds, then there are a huge range of quality effects to explore, and applying them mostly only takes a click. If you want a fast and fun way to get more creative with your images then this tool is an absolute must.
